Berlin's museums and big sights are open on Sundays, while most shops are closed. Here is what that means for a Sunday plan, and where a flea market takes over.
- Closed on Sundays
- Shopping centres and department stores (Bikini Berlin, KaDeWe, Mall of Berlin), Markthalle Neun, Solar, Klunkerkranich
- Open on Sundays
- Museum Island museums, Gemäldegalerie, Neue Nationalgalerie (10:00–18:00), Reichstag Dome (registration), Berlin Cathedral (from 12:00)
- Sunday only
- Mauerpark flea market, 10:00–18:00
- Sunday route
- 5 stops and a lunch break, about 2.8 km on foot, 09:00–17:07
- Not verified
- Kurfürstendamm is a typical-class stop marked closed on Sundays; the food stops are typical-class too

Berlin on a Sunday splits in two: the museums are open and the shops are not. The Museum Island museums, the Gemäldegalerie and the Neue Nationalgalerie are open from 10:00 to 18:00, the Reichstag Dome opens every day, and shop opening is restricted by law. A Sunday plan built around a shopping stop falls apart, while one built around museums works.
MEVAYA's Berlin data covers 41 stops. Seven are marked closed on Sundays: six with checked hours (Markthalle Neun, Klunkerkranich, Solar, Bikini Berlin, KaDeWe, Mall of Berlin) and one typical-class stop, Kurfürstendamm, where the closure is an assumption. One stop exists on Sundays only, the Mauerpark flea market. Every changeable fact below was checked against an official page on 7 October 2026.

Plan my SundayShops, markets and bars: closed on Sundays
In Berlin, shops must be closed on Sundays and public holidays, according to the district office page we checked. Of ten possible shop-open Sundays a year, eight are set centrally for the whole city. The exceptions on the same page: shops selling only flowers, plants, newspapers, baked goods or dairy products may open from 07:00 to 16:00, souvenir and guidebook shops from 13:00 to 20:00, and shops at railway stations, airports and coach terminals may open too. A bakery on a Sunday morning is possible, a department store is not. MEVAYA gives no legal advice here: if your trip falls near a shop-open Sunday, check the city's calendar.
Bikini Berlin, KaDeWe and Mall of Berlin are listed as open Monday to Saturday from 10:00 to 20:00 and closed on Sunday in MEVAYA's data, last checked on 25 September 2026; KaDeWe occasionally opens on special shopping Sundays. Kurfürstendamm is a typical-class stop: MEVAYA marks it closed on Sundays but has not checked individual shops, so read that as a warning.
Markthalle Neun lists Monday to Saturday hours on its tourist-board page, 08:00 to 20:00 with Thursday until 22:00, and no regular Sunday opening. The page mentions themed Sunday markets from time to time. Treat the hall as closed on an ordinary Sunday and check the programme if a Sunday market is the plan.
Solar, the bar on the 16th floor near Anhalter Bahnhof, is closed on Sundays and Mondays. It opens at 18:00 from Tuesday to Saturday, so it is a Friday idea, not a Sunday one.
Klunkerkranich, the rooftop garden bar on a shopping-centre car park in Neukölln, is in its off-season until 31 December 2026: Friday and Saturday from 16:00, and closed every year from January to early March, according to its own website, checked on 7 October 2026. Hours shift with the season and the events programme, so it is not a Sunday stop either.
Open on Sundays, with conditions
The Neues Museum, the Alte Nationalgalerie, the Altes Museum, the Gemäldegalerie and the Neue Nationalgalerie are open on Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00 and closed on Mondays, according to the official page of the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Sunday is the right day for these museums, and Monday is the wrong one.
The Reichstag Dome and roof terrace are open daily, and a visit needs advance registration. The Bundestag page also mentions same-day registration at the service office on Platz der Republik, subject to capacity. Register before you travel and treat a same-day slot as a bonus.
Berlin Cathedral opens at 12:00 on Sundays and closes at 18:00, last entry 17:00, against 09:00 on other days. Services and events can change the hours. Plan the cathedral for the afternoon and expect to check the schedule on the day.
The Mauerpark flea market runs on Sundays from 10:00 to 18:00 and is free to enter, according to berlin.de. It is the one stop in MEVAYA's Berlin data that exists only on Sundays. It sits north of the centre in Prenzlauer Berg, so give it a morning of its own.
A Sunday route that avoids every closed door
The route above is what the MEVAYA planner builds for Sunday 4 October 2026: five stops and a lunch break, about 2.8 km on foot, from 09:00 to 17:07. It starts with the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Brandenburg Gate, because open-air stops have no opening hours, then the Reichstag Dome at 10:48, lunch, the Gemäldegalerie at 13:47 and the Neue Nationalgalerie at 15:49.
The Reichstag stop assumes a registered slot. Register for a time around 10:48, or move the dome to another slot; the rest of the day does not depend on it.
Lunch is a 60-minute break after the Reichstag Dome, not a reservation. The food stops in MEVAYA's Berlin data, apart from Markthalle Neun, are typical-class, so their Sunday hours are not verified. Call first, or choose a place that lists Sunday hours.
Before you go
Sunday is the day Berlin's museums are open and Monday is the day they are not. If your trip covers both, put the museums on Sunday and keep Monday for open-air stops and memorials. The Monday guide lists what is open when Museum Island is shut.
Shopping is the Sunday trap. Buy what you need on Saturday: the exceptions above cover bakeries, flowers and stations, not a full shop.
