On a Sunday in Rome, the Vatican Museums are closed, and that is the one closure that can wreck a plan. They open on the last Sunday of the month only, from 09:00 to 14:00, with free entry and last entry at 12:30. On every other Sunday the Sistine Chapel is off the list, while most of central Rome stays open.

MEVAYA's Rome data covers 41 stops. Seven are marked closed on Sundays: three with checked hours (Vatican Museums, Testaccio Market, Campo de' Fiori market) and four typical-class stops, where the closure is an assumption rather than a checked fact. One stop exists on Sundays only, the Porta Portese flea market. Every changeable fact below was checked against an official page on 7 October 2026.

Plan my Sunday

Closed on Sundays

The Vatican Museums are closed on Sundays, except on the last Sunday of the month. That Sunday they open from 09:00 to 14:00 with free entry and last entry at 12:30, and the official page says the opening is skipped when the last Sunday falls on Easter, 29 June, 25 December, 26 December or 31 December. A free day draws the longest queue of the month, which makes it a poor trade for a first visit. Move the Vatican to a weekday and give the Sunday to something that is open.

Mercato di Testaccio is open Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 15:30 and closed on Sunday. A Sunday lunch built around its sandwich counters ends at a locked hall. Eat there on a Saturday and find another lunch for the Sunday.

The Campo de' Fiori market runs Monday to Saturday from 07:00 to 14:00. On Sunday the square is still there, without the stalls. Rome has plenty of squares, so treat this one as a place to cross, not a destination.

Four typical-class stops are marked closed on Sundays in MEVAYA's data: the Testaccio restaurants MASTO and Ar Monte, the wine bar Enoteca Cuverie and the shopping street Via Cola di Rienzo. MEVAYA has not checked these closures against an official source, so read them as a warning rather than a fact. Call the restaurants before you walk there, and expect the shops on Via Cola di Rienzo to set their own hours.

Open on Sundays, with conditions

The Colosseum is open on Sundays. Until 24 October 2026 it closes at 18:30 with last entry at 17:30; from 25 October it closes at 16:30 with last entry at 15:30. Entry is free on the first Sunday of the month, which is also the busiest day of that month. On the free Sunday, tickets are handed out at the ticket offices on the day, first come first served, with no online booking, and the arena floor, the underground and the upper levels are not open. On any other winter Sunday, book the morning and treat the afternoon as lost.

The Pantheon is open every day from 09:00 to 19:00, last entry 18:30, and costs 7 euros. On the first Sunday of the month entry is free, with the free tickets collected at the ticket desks and machines on site, and without priority access. The price of the free day is the queue.

Castel Sant'Angelo is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:30, last entry 18:30. On the first Sunday of the month entry is free, with no online booking and one queue for the free ticket at the cashier, according to the official site as of 12 October 2026. The free day costs time at the door instead of money.

Galleria Borghese is open Tuesday to Sunday from 09:00 to 19:00, last entrance 17:45. Reservation is required for every ticket, free ones included, so a Sunday visit starts with a booking, not with a walk to the door.

The Basilica of San Clemente opens late on Sundays: from 12:00 to 18:00, last entrance 17:30, against 09:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00 on other days. A Sunday visit fits after lunch, not before it.

The Porta Portese flea market runs on Sunday mornings from 06:00 to 14:00, and some stalls stay until 17:00, according to the markets' own site. It is the one stop in MEVAYA's Rome data that exists only on Sundays. A morning there takes the hours the route above gives to the Colosseum, so on a market Sunday move the Colosseum to the afternoon and check its last entry first.

A Sunday route that avoids every closed door

The route above is what the MEVAYA planner builds for Sunday 4 October 2026: five stops and a lunch break, about 4.8 km on foot, from 09:00 to 17:47. It starts with the Colosseum at 09:00 and the Roman Forum, takes lunch, and leaves the open-air stops, which have no opening hours, for the afternoon: the Aventine Keyhole, Trastevere and Piazza Navona.

The order follows the Colosseum's winter hours. From 25 October 2026 it closes at 16:30 with last entry at 15:30, and the planner uses that stricter window all year, so the Colosseum and the Forum come first and the open-air stops, which never close, come last. On a free first Sunday the tickets are handed out at the ticket offices on the day, so the 09:00 start depends on the queue.

Lunch is a 60-minute break after the Roman Forum & Palatine Hill, not a reservation. Restaurants in MEVAYA's Rome data are typical-class stops, so their Sunday hours are not verified. Book a table or call first.

Before you go

Two calendar rules change a Sunday in Rome. On the first Sunday of the month the Colosseum, the Pantheon and Castel Sant'Angelo are free, and on the last Sunday the Vatican Museums are free from 09:00 to 14:00. In both cases free means busy. Plan a free Sunday for a second visit, not for the first.

Rome has the opposite problem on Mondays, when Galleria Borghese and several other museums close. If your trip covers both days, read the Monday guide before you fix the order of the days.
