- Currency
- Euro (€). Cards widely accepted, but carry some cash — small bars, Spätis and market stalls are still cash-only more often than you'd expect.
- Emergency
- 112 fire & ambulance · 110 police. Free from any phone, English understood.
- Time zone
- CET / CEST (UTC+1, +2 in summer).
- Power
- Type C/F sockets, 230V. UK and US visitors need an adapter.
- Language
- German. English is unusually widely spoken here, including off the tourist track.
- Getting around
- BVG day ticket zone AB ≈ €9.90 covers U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus. Zone ABC for BER airport. Buy in the BVG app; validate paper tickets before boarding.
- Tipping
- 5–10%, by rounding up. Say the total as you hand over the money — don't leave coins and walk off.
- Meal times
- Lunch roughly 12:00–14:00 , dinner from 18:00 . Berlin eats earlier than southern Europe — smaller kitchens can close by 22:00.
- Sundays
- Shops are closed by law , including every mall. Cafés, restaurants, bakeries and museums stay open.
- Tap water
- Safe and good. Bring a refillable bottle.
- Safety
- Safe by big-city standards. The real risk is pickpocketing in crowds: Alexanderplatz, Warschauer Straße, busy U-Bahn carriages.
- Daylight
- Matters more than you'd think. In December it's dark by 16:00 ; in June, light until 21:30 . The planner assumes summer hours — in winter, front-load anything outdoors.
