A city that never tidied its own history away. You walk from a Prussian boulevard into a bullet-scarred facade into a club in a power station, and all three are the real Berlin. Distances are big and the U-Bahn is your friend — days here work best when you pick two districts and go deep rather than ticking off the map.

Barcelona is two cities stitched together: the tangled medieval Gothic Quarter and Cerdà's ruler-straight Eixample, with the Mediterranean closing off one side. The Gaudí sites sell out days ahead and the hills above the city hold the best views — both reward planning around them rather than hoping for the best.

London doesn't have a centre so much as a collection of neighbourhoods that each think they're it. The great museums are free and enormous, the parks are genuinely used, and the distances will surprise you — a day here is really a day in two or three areas, connected by the Tube and separated by more than the map suggests.

Vienna kept the palaces, the picture galleries and the habit of sitting for two hours over one coffee. It is compact enough to walk, formal enough to feel like an occasion, and quietly stubborn about its own rhythms — kitchens, concert halls and coffee houses all run to schedules worth knowing in advance.

Byzantine capital, Ottoman capital, and a working megacity of sixteen million, all on the same peninsula. The headline sights are active mosques with daily prayer closures and a long Friday midday gap — the single most useful thing to plan around here, and the reason a good day sequences the old city rather than just listing it.

The monuments are exactly as advertised; the surprise is how fast the crowds thin when you step off the axis. Paris rewards a day that alternates — one ticketed landmark, one arrondissement to wander. Timed entry is now mandatory at more museums than most visitors expect, so the booking matters as much as the route.

Rome doesn't separate its eras — a 12th-century church sits on a 4th-century basilica on a Roman house, and all of it is still open. The centre is walkable but relentless underfoot, the heat is real, and the best-value hours are early morning and the long golden evening. Book the big three; improvise the rest.

Prague came through the 20th century with its old town essentially undamaged, which is why the view over the rooftops still looks like a woodcut. The castle side and the old town side are separated by the river and a very crowded bridge — cross early or late, and the same walk becomes a different city.

Venice runs on foot and on water, which changes every assumption about how a day fits together — a stop 300 metres away can be a ten-minute walk around a canal. The reward for planning it properly is the version of the city most day-trippers never reach: the quiet sestieri, the empty churches, the early morning before the cruise crowds land.

Munich is the least hurried of the big German cities — a compact old town, an English Garden bigger than Central Park with surfers in the middle of it, and beer gardens that function as public living rooms. The Wittelsbach palaces bookend it, and the Alps are close enough to change the light.
