- Currency
- Pound sterling (£), not euro . London is effectively cashless — contactless card or phone works everywhere, including buses, which take no cash at all .
- Emergency
- 999 or 112 , both work. 111 for urgent but non-emergency medical advice.
- Time zone
- GMT / BST (UTC+0, +1 in summer) — one hour behind Germany all year. Easy to get wrong on arrival.
- Power
- Type G three-pin sockets, 230V. You need an adapter — European plugs do not fit.
- Getting around
- Just tap a contactless card or phone at the barrier — no ticket, no Oyster card needed, and the daily cap means you never pay more than a day pass. Tap in and out on the Tube; on buses, tap in only.
- Airport transfer
- From Heathrow, the Piccadilly line (Underground) is the cheapest way in at a flat £5.90, though it takes 50-60 minutes and the fare doesn't change with time of day. The Elizabeth line is faster, around 35 minutes from Zone 1, but rose to £15.50 in the 2026 fare update — the single biggest increase in that round of changes. Heathrow Express is fastest at 15 minutes to Paddington specifically, for £25. The Piccadilly line does occasionally close for weekend engineering works; Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line are the fallback when it does.
- Tipping
- Restaurants usually add a discretionary 12.5% service charge to the bill — check before adding more, and you can ask for it to be removed. You never tip at a pub bar. Taxis: round up.
- Pubs
- You order and pay at the bar , not at the table, unless there is a sign saying otherwise. No one will come to take your order, and waiting for them is the classic visitor mistake.
- Free museums
- The British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, Natural History Museum and V&A are all free . Some ask you to book a free timed slot; the suggested donation is genuinely optional.
- Sundays
- Shops open, but with restricted Sunday hours — large stores only trade six hours, usually 12:00–18:00. Westminster Abbey and St Paul's close to sightseers entirely.
- Meal times
- Lunch 12:00–14:30 , dinner from 18:00 . Pub kitchens often stop by 21:00 — earlier than most of Europe.
- Tap water
- Safe and free. Restaurants must provide it on request, and asking for "tap water" is completely normal.
- Escalators
- Stand on the right, walk on the left. This is not a suggestion, and standing on the left will get you told.
